For several months, we’ve shared the challenges of operating an independent farmers market.

Monthly expenses:

LA County park: $630-$750

Security: $500

Internet and equipment: $150 to process payment and EBT transactions in the park

Payroll and taxes @$2000

Square fees and loan payments: @$1200

Total=@$4300+

Plus:
Annual permit fees: @ $1200
Annual insurance renewal: @$500
Monthly income:
Vendor fees: @$1600-@$2400 – this increases when the market is busy and when you shop online
Donations: @$200
Market Match processing payroll: $800
=@$3400
We have reached out to @supervisorkathrynbarger (who has been very supportive of the market) and @lacountyparks . Since this is a community service in a County park space serving County constituents, we feel that the County should:
Absorb all County fees (monthly and annual)
OR
Assume the Market, keeping on our market staff and vendors
AND
County and park actively promote the Market, which is their Core Community Partner
OR
Another community solution???
We believe that it’s important to keep the market in NW Altadena, which is affected by lack of food resources, poverty and transportation challenges, impacting mostly BIPOC community members.
